Finding Peace in Uncertain Times:7 Gentle Ways to Feel More Grounded
As I've got older, I've noticed that life often feels more uncertain. And from the conversations I have with other women, I know I'm not alone.
For many women, midlife can bring a whole new set of challenges. Hormonal shifts, physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and major life changes can all seem to arrive at once, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, confused and unsure of ourselves.
Experiencing perimenopause or menopause can make those feelings of uncertainty even heavier.
It's no wonder so many of us find ourselves waiting for life to settle down before we allow ourselves to relax.
"Once things calm down, then I'll rest."
"Once everything is sorted, then I'll feel better."
But what if that day never comes?
Rather than waiting for life to become certain, perhaps we can learn to find peace in the middle of the uncertainty.
Here are seven gentle ways to help you feel calmer, more grounded and better able to cope with whatever life brings.
1. Accept that uncertainty is part of life
There will always be things we simply can't control.
The more we try to control every outcome, the more anxious and overwhelmed we often become. It's a cycle that leaves us feeling exhausted and powerless.
Acceptance doesn't mean giving up. It means recognising what is within your control and gently letting go of what isn't.
When we stop fighting uncertainty, we create space for peace.
2. Focus on today
When everything feels uncertain, it's easy for our minds to race ahead, imagining every possible outcome.
Instead, gently bring yourself back to today.
Ask yourself:
"What do I need today?"
You don't have to solve next month or even next week.
Just today.
Focusing on the present moment helps quieten an anxious mind and reduces feelings of overwhelm.
3. Create calming daily rituals
Our brains are designed to look for safety and predictability. That's one reason simple daily routines can feel so comforting.
Every time we repeat a habit, our brain strengthens the pathway associated with that behaviour. Over time, those familiar routines begin to signal safety and stability, helping us feel calmer, even when life feels uncertain.
Your daily rituals don't need to be complicated. They might include:
Enjoying your morning cup of tea
Journalling for a few minutes
Spending five minutes outside
Following a simple skincare routine
Reading before bed
Perhaps you already have your own little rituals that bring you comfort.
These small moments may seem insignificant, but together they create a sense of emotional safety and consistency that your mind and body will thank you for.
4. Reduce information overload
We live in a world where we're constantly surrounded by information.
Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is simply step back.
Try:
Less scrolling
Less comparing yourself to others
More listening to yourself
Learn to tune into what your own body needs rather than what everyone else says you should be doing.
The more you listen to yourself, the more trust you'll build in your own inner wisdom.
5. Look after your nervous system
When life feels unpredictable, our nervous system can remain on high alert.
That's why it's so important to intentionally create moments that help you slow down, regulate your emotions and feel safe.
Mindfulness and relaxation practices are wonderful for this.
I've created a free Mindful Self-Care Guide filled with simple ideas to help you slow down and reconnect with yourself. If you'd like a copy, you can download it here:

Other gentle ways to support your nervous system include:
Slow, deep breathing
Going for a gentle walk
Stretching
Spending time in nature
Creating healthy sleep habits
Remember, calming your nervous system isn't a luxury—it's an important part of caring for your overall wellbeing.
6. Practice self-kindness
During uncertain times, it's easy to become your own worst critic.
You may find yourself thinking you're not coping well enough or that you should have everything figured out by now.
Instead of saying:
"I should have it all together."
Try saying:
"I'm doing the best I can today."
Because that's all any of us can do.
Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding you would offer a close friend.
7. Trust yourself
Take a moment to think about everything you've already overcome.
There have been difficult seasons before, and somehow, you found your way through.
This season will be no different.
You don't need every answer.
You don't need to know exactly what tomorrow looks like.
You simply need to trust yourself to take the next gentle step.
None of us knows exactly what the future holds, and that can feel uncomfortable. But every small act of kindness you show yourself today is helping you build resilience for whatever comes next.
Peace doesn't come from knowing what will happen.
It comes from knowing you'll care for yourself whatever happens.
And sometimes, that's all the certainty we need.
Thank you so much for reading.
With love,
Anne-Marie 💜
