Confidence in Midlife Gentle Ways to Rebuild Trust in Yourself

August 10, 20264 min read

Confidence, or a lack of it, is something I have worked on for many years.

Eventually, I reached a point where I would say I felt pretty confident about most things – myself, how I looked and where I was in life.

Things felt comfortable, and I was happy there.

Then I approached midlife, and it was as though, all of a sudden, the doubts and fears began to creep back in.

Speaking to other women, I now realise just how common this is.

With the impact of perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating hormones can cause chaos at times. Our bodies change. Life changes.

Perhaps your children are leaving home.

One of the biggest changes for me was realising that I wasn't needed in quite the same way anymore. Chloe had grown into such an independent young woman. After years of looking after her, all of a sudden she didn't need that same level of care from me.

I have to admit, I felt really unsettled.

I was no longer sure what my role was within the home. If I wasn't needed in the same way anymore, who was I?

Maybe you're facing career changes, or even starting to think about retirement. That can feel daunting too.

For me, I decided to start a new business during this time. Although I was really excited by the opportunity, I have to say those familiar seeds of self-doubt soon crept back in.

Could I really do this?

Was I good enough?

No matter the reason behind your lack of confidence, it's important to remember this:

Confidence isn't something we're born with. It grows through action.

In fact, every time we avoid doing something because we don't feel confident enough, we're sending signals to our brain that we were right not to do it.

We don't want to reinforce that belief.

So, how can we rebuild trust in ourselves?

1. Stop Waiting Until You "Feel Confident"

Because that day may never come.

As I mentioned earlier, confidence grows by doing the thing, not by waiting until you feel ready.

2. Celebrate the Small Wins

It's easy to brush over the little victories because we're always looking ahead to the next challenge.

But every small win is a reminder of the progress you're making.

Take a moment to celebrate them. You're building a library of evidence that says, "I can do hard things."

3. Speak to Yourself Like Someone You Love

Your self-talk is so important.

Imagine telling someone you love that they're rubbish or that they'll never be good enough.

You wouldn't.

Yet so many of us speak to ourselves that way every day.

This has been a big one for me and something I've consciously worked on over the years.

4. Wear Clothes and Use Skincare That Helps You Feel Cared For, Not "Fixed"

When we feel good in ourselves, we naturally show up differently.

A mentor once told me, "If you're not feeling 100% in the clothes you're wearing today, go back upstairs and change."

I've actually done that, and it made a huge difference.

It's one of the reasons I love sharing Tropic with other women. Helping women care for their skin isn't about chasing perfection; it's about creating little moments of self-care that remind us we're worth looking after.

5. Spend Time With People Who Lift You Up

It's very difficult to feel good about yourself if you're surrounded by people who don't encourage or support you.

Your circle matters.

Choose it wisely.

6. Stretch Your Comfort Zone, Just a Little

Remember this:

Everything that's inside your comfort zone today was once outside it.

Read that again.

Things only become comfortable because we've done them over and over again.

Every small step outside your comfort zone is another step towards greater confidence.

7. Keep the Promises You Make to Yourself

Just as other people learn to trust you because you show up and do what you say you'll do, the same is true for yourself.

Every time you keep a promise to yourself, you're building self-trust.

And confidence grows every time you prove to yourself that you can rely on you.

Final Thoughts

Midlife brings change.

Some of it is exciting.

Some of it can leave us questioning who we are.

But perhaps this season of life isn't about becoming someone different.

Perhaps it's about rediscovering the woman you've always been beneath the self-doubt.

You already have everything you need within you to go out and do the things you want to do.

Trust yourself.

Take the first small step.

Your confidence will grow from there.

Thank you so much for reading.
